Lakshadweep: India's Best-Kept Island Secret

Ask most travellers to name an island paradise off India's coast, and they'll reach for the Maldives before they think of Lakshadweep — which is strange, because Lakshadweep is closer, cheaper to reach from most Indian cities, and arguably just as beautiful. It's also far less visited, largely because access has historically been more restricted, which is exactly why it's worth the extra planning.

The archipelago sits a few hundred kilometres off the coast of Kerala, and getting there is part of the experience: flights or ferries out of Kochi to islands like Agatti, Kavaratti, or Bangaram, followed by a short boat transfer across water so clear you can watch fish shadow the hull. The lagoons here are the headline act — shallow, warm, and startlingly turquoise, ringed by coral reefs that drop off into deep blue only a short swim from shore.

Bangaram Island is the most commonly recommended stop for first-time visitors, largely uninhabited and built almost entirely around its lagoon and reef. Agatti offers a livelier introduction with a small local population, guesthouses, and easy access to snorkelling and diving spots. Kavaratti, the administrative capital, is a good base if you want a mix of local life alongside the beaches.

Diving and snorkelling are the main draws beneath the surface, and the reefs here are in noticeably better condition than many more heavily trafficked destinations — a direct result of how few visitors the islands see each year. Expect reef sharks, turtles, and coral gardens that most divers agree rival anywhere in the Indian Ocean, without the crowds that now define more famous reef destinations.

Because Lakshadweep is a protected Union Territory, travel here requires a permit, and most visitors book through an authorised operator rather than arranging things independently — it sounds like a hurdle, but in practice it simplifies the trip, since the operator handles permits, transfers, and accommodation as a package. It also means Lakshadweep has avoided the overdevelopment that's changed the character of other island destinations; there are no high-rise resorts here, just simple beach huts and a handful of eco-conscious properties.

If your idea of an island holiday is coral, quiet, and water so clear it feels unreal, Lakshadweep delivers all three — and does it without the six-hour seaplane transfers or the price tag that usually comes with that view.
